What Do We Know about Presidents Day?

Does every United States citizen know about Presidents Day? We all do know that February means special for most of us. It is because of the Valentine’s Day. We celebrate the day of love and care sharing. But do all of us know about another special day or some other days occurring on this month? It is when we can get the school and work day off. We may consider it a just an ordinary holiday, following others who take a day off from their schools and offices. It is also a good time for shopping when most stores offer big deals. Is it the exact meaning of this federal holiday?

Presidents’ Day may be always misspelled as President’s Day. It is celebrated every the third Monday on February.  Historically, this federal holiday was used to celebrate Washington’s Birthday. It was aimed to give honor to George Washington, the first US president. Was George Washington born on the third Monday of February? Well, there are two styles of calendar used to know about the exact date. They are Gregorian and Julian. Based on Gregorian calendar or today’s calendar, February 22nd 1732 was George Washington birthday. However, Julian calendar shown that he was born on February 11th in the same year. In 1790’s some US people celebrated it on February 22nd, and some others on February 11th.

Besides George Washington as the Father of the Country, there was still one president that was born on the same month. It was Abraham Lincoln. He was born on February 12th.  In the beginning of 1968, US people had two important federal days to celebrate on February. They were on February 22nd to give honor to George Washington’s birthday and February 12th to give honor to Abraham Lincoln’s. In the 90th Congress in 1968, three holidays was turned to Mondays, including Washington’s Birthday. Although it had been stated by then, there were still same states that did not change the federal holiday.

What about now? People in US seem having used to the federal holiday celebration on the third Monday of February.  Because it is celebrated on Monday, it makes the holidays longer from Friday to Monday. And that is why the business industries take the opportunity to offer big deals on three-day sales. Although it may mean a lot for US people, it will be more meaningful to visit memorial places of US presidents and do some researches to get to know about them more to celebrate the Presidents Day.
